Best Truck and Driving Simulators on Steam

Driving simulators are the genre people are most likely to describe as boring right up until they try one, and then lose an entire weekend to a delivery from Hamburg to Lisbon. What makes them work is that nothing is abstracted away. The route planning, the fuel stop, the rest break, the awkward reverse into a bay that is two feet wider than your trailer: it is all there, and none of it is a cutscene. That also makes them unusually good completionist games, because the achievement lists tend to reward doing the job properly rather than doing it fast, and a clean delivery with no damage and no fines is a skill you actually build over dozens of hours. These are the road, rail and off-road sims on Steam we think are most worth committing to, ranked on how well the driving itself holds up over a long career.

1Euro Truck Simulator 2
Euro Truck Simulator 2
Still the benchmark, and after more than a decade of map expansions it is enormous. 106 achievements, none of them hidden, and a large share are gated behind specific DLC regions rather than skill, so read the list before buying to see what a full clear would actually cost you.

2American Truck Simulator
American Truck Simulator
The same engine and feel pointed at long, empty US interstates, which changes the rhythm more than you would expect. 140 achievements, the biggest list on this page, and like its European sibling many of them are tied to individual state DLCs.

3SnowRunner
SnowRunner
Off-road hauling where the terrain is the antagonist and a delivery can genuinely take an hour of winching, rerouting and getting stuck. 37 achievements on a game that is far more about the recovery than the driving.

4MudRunner
MudRunner
The leaner predecessor, and arguably the purer version of the idea: fewer systems, less progression, more time spent studying a mud patch. 62 achievements, notably more than SnowRunner despite being the smaller game.

5Bus Simulator 21 Next Stop
Bus Simulator 21 Next Stop
Route driving with passengers, timetables and a management layer on top, so a mistake costs you a rating rather than a load of cargo. 37 achievements, and the schedule pressure gives it a very different tension to freight hauling.

6Train Sim World® 6
Train Sim World® 6
The most simulation-forward entry here, in that operating the train correctly is genuinely a thing you have to learn rather than intuit. Only 19 achievements in the base game, which makes it the shortest completion on the list by some margin.

7Dakar Desert Rally
Dakar Desert Rally
Rally-raid rather than haulage, where navigation matters as much as speed and a wrong turn in open desert costs you the stage. 55 achievements across a surprisingly deep licensed rally career.

8Autobahn Police Simulator 3
Autobahn Police Simulator 3
Highway patrol rather than delivery, so a shift is traffic stops, accident scenes and the occasional pursuit. 56 achievements, and the procedural side of the job is treated as content rather than an obstacle.

9Truck Driver: The American Dream
Truck Driver: The American Dream
A more narrative take on trucking, with characters and a career story wrapped around the hauling. 40 achievements, and the story framing makes it an easier entry point than the open-ended sims above it.
