CRPG
Best CRPGs on Steam
The computer role-playing game is the genre that trusts you with a rulebook and then gets out of the way. Party composition, dialogue checks you can fail, quests that resolve in ways the designers never explicitly signposted — a good CRPG is less a story you are told than a system you argue with. The modern revival has produced some of the deepest games on Steam, from turn-based tactical epics to isometric classics rebuilt for today, and their achievement lists tend to reward the exact thing the genre is about: replaying with a different build and finding out how differently it goes.

Baldur's Gate 3
The genre's mainstream breakthrough: a huge, reactive D&D campaign where almost any daft plan you try has been anticipated. Turn-based combat with real tactical depth and a party you will genuinely argue about.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition
The most systemically playful CRPG going, where elemental surfaces, teleportation and sheer physics abuse turn every fight into a sandbox. Co-op with a friend who has their own agenda is the definitive way to play.

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut
No combat at all — just a detective, a wrecked psyche and 24 warring skills that talk back to you. The writing is the mechanic, and it is extraordinary.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous - Enhanced Edition
Enormous, unashamedly crunchy Pathfinder rules with mythic paths that meaningfully rewrite your character and the campaign. Build-obsessives get more to chew on here than almost anywhere else.

Fallout: New Vegas
The high-water mark for reactive RPG writing in a first-person shell: faction politics you can genuinely tilt, and skill checks that open real alternatives to shooting. Still the one people compare everything else to.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
A CRPG that finally gets 40K right — you are a merchant prince with a warship, ruling by decree across a whole sector. Dense, grim and surprisingly thoughtful about its own setting.

Pillars of Eternity
The Kickstarter revival that proved isometric CRPGs still worked, with real-time-with-pause combat and a beautifully realised original world. A dense read in the best way.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire
The sequel trades gloom for a sun-bleached archipelago, adds ship-to-ship exploration and sharpens the writing. Its turn-based mode makes it far more approachable than the original.

Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition
The strangest and most literary CRPG ever made, about an immortal amnesiac asking what can change the nature of a man. Combat is the weakest part and it barely matters.

Wasteland 3
Post-apocalyptic squad tactics with a mean sense of humour and choices that land hard on whole settlements. Excellent turn-based combat and a co-op mode that lets a friend ruin your diplomacy.

Tyranny
You play the villain's enforcer after evil has already won, and the game is built around how you wield that authority. Short by genre standards but unusually reactive.

UnderRail
A hardcore, old-school isometric RPG set in a post-apocalyptic metro network, unforgiving about builds and proud of it. Deep, hostile and hugely rewarding if you meet it on its terms.
