Steam Achievement Sets, explained

On 15 October 2026 Valve added Achievement Sets to the Steam client beta. It is the biggest change to Steam achievements in years: games can now split their list into groups, DLC no longer has to break your 100%, and developers can retire achievements that can no longer be earned. Here is what changes and how SteamVault handles it.

Updated October 2026 · Steam client beta

What changes

  • Sets. Developers group achievements however suits the game, for example single-player and co-op, or one set per class. Each set gets its own progress bar.
  • Set complete trophies. Finishing every achievement in a set adds a "set complete" trophy to your Steam profile.
  • DLC sets. Achievements that need a DLC sit in their own set and only count toward your completion if you have that DLC.
  • Archiving. Developers can archive achievements or whole sets, such as a finished seasonal event. You keep them if you earned them; if you didn't, they stop counting against you.
  • Completion is kept. If new achievements are added to a set you already finished, your completion is preserved. New content usually comes as a new set.
  • A new achievements page. Per-set progress, a friends comparison for up to three friends, and the Perfect Games tab renamed to Completed.

Which games have sets?

Only games whose developers set them up. Around 17 supported sets at the start of the beta, and Valve expects the feature to reach everyone in roughly a month. Three we have checked on Steam:

  • Portal 2: Single Player (29) and Cooperative (22)
  • Team Fortress 2: One set per class, plus Halloween, Christmas, Replay, Foundry, Mann vs. Machine and Doomsday
  • Forza Horizon 5: Base game (110), plus Hot Wheels (27) and Rally Adventure (27) as DLC sets

How SteamVault handles it

  • Per-set progress on game pages. Games with sets show each set, its DLC tag and your progress in it.
  • Your completion matches Steam. Archived achievements you don't have don't count, and DLC sets don't count until you start them.
  • How we decide a DLC is "started". Steam doesn't tell us which DLC you own, so a DLC set counts once you have earned at least one achievement in it. Until then it is shown, but not counted.
  • Nothing is taken away. Every achievement you have earned stays on your profile and in your totals, archived or not.
  • Profiles update on the next refresh. Hit Refresh on your profile to see the new numbers straight away.

Quick answers

What are Steam Achievement Sets?

A way for developers to split a game’s achievements into named groups, such as single-player and co-op, one set per class, or a separate set for each DLC. Steam then shows a progress bar for each set and a "set complete" trophy when you finish one.

Do DLC achievements still count against my 100%?

Not in games that use sets. A DLC set only counts toward your completion if you have that DLC. Achievements from DLC you don’t own no longer stop a game from showing as complete.

What does an archived achievement mean?

Developers can archive achievements or whole sets, for example seasonal events that are over. If you already earned an archived achievement you keep it. If you didn’t, it no longer counts against your completion.

Will I lose my 100% when a game adds new achievements?

In games that use sets, Steam keeps your completed status for a set even if new achievements are added to it later. New content usually arrives as a new set instead.

Does every game have achievement sets?

No. Developers have to set them up in Steamworks. Around 17 games supported sets when the beta launched on 15 October 2026, including Portal 2, Team Fortress 2 and Forza Horizon 5. More will follow over time.

How does SteamVault handle achievement sets?

SteamVault reads each game’s sets from Steam and shows per-set progress on the game page. Your completion follows the same rules as Steam: archived achievements you don’t have don’t count, and a DLC set only counts once you have earned at least one achievement in it, because Steam doesn’t share which DLC you own. Nothing you have earned is ever removed.
