Best Rhythm Games on Steam
Rhythm games live or die on feel. The great ones make the beat the input method itself, so hitting the note and playing well become the same action, and the moment it clicks you stop reading the screen and start hearing the level. Steam has become the home of the genre's weirdest and most inventive corners, from beat-locked roguelikes and rhythm shooters to one-button precision trials and pure comedic nonsense. These are the ones worth your speakers, and most of them back the music up with achievement lists that push you toward perfect runs and higher difficulties.

Crypt of the NecroDancer
A dungeon crawler where every step, attack and dodge has to land on the beat, which turns a roguelike into a rhythm game without losing either half. The soundtrack is the reason it became a genre landmark, and the achievement list pushes you deep into its characters and modes.

Hi-Fi RUSH
A stylish character-action game where the whole world pulses on the beat and your combos hit harder when you sync to it. It works even if your timing is shaky, but nailing the rhythm is where the combat really opens up.

Metal: Hellsinger
A rhythm FPS where firing on the beat multiplies your damage and layers more of the metal track back into the mix. Playing well literally makes the song better, which is the cleanest feedback loop in the genre.

Rhythm Doctor
Built around a single input pressed on the seventh beat, which sounds trivial until each stage bends and hides the rhythm in new ways. Charming, funny and far harder than its one-button premise suggests.

Thumper
Self-described rhythm violence: a chrome beetle hurtling down a track at speed while a hostile industrial score bears down on you. Brutal, hypnotic and unlike anything else on this list.

Rift of the NecroDancer
The NecroDancer team going full note-highway, trading dungeon crawling for lane-based charts and a hefty original soundtrack. More conventional than Crypt, and much easier to recommend to people who just want to hit notes.

Muse Dash
A side-scrolling rhythm platformer with a huge, constantly growing song library and a bright anime presentation. Approachable on the low difficulties and genuinely punishing at the top end.

A Dance of Fire and Ice
Two orbiting planets and one button, with tracks that constantly change the shape of the path underneath you. Deceptively minimal and one of the purest tests of internal rhythm on Steam.

BPM: BULLETS PER MINUTE
A roguelike FPS where shooting, reloading and dodging all have to happen on the beat of a heavy rock soundtrack. The reload timing in particular takes real practice to internalise.

Sayonara Wild Hearts
A short, gorgeous pop album you play through, built from motorcycle chases and dreamlike set pieces. Less demanding than the rest of the list and better for it, with a strong replay hook for high ranks.

Trombone Champ
A deliberately ridiculous game about sliding a trombone around and producing terrible noises, which is exactly the point. Underneath the joke there is a real and surprisingly demanding pitch-and-timing game.
