The soulslike is less a genre than a philosophy: deliberate, stamina-managed combat, punishing bosses that demand you learn their every tell, checkpoints that reset the enemies but keep your knowledge, and a hard-won sense of mastery when a wall you have died to a dozen times finally falls. Since FromSoftware codified the formula, a whole wave of studios has put its own spin on it, from lightning-fast parry duels to loot-driven shooters. FromSoftware's open-world masterwork and the genre's high-water mark. The freedom to wander off and grind or explore when a boss walls you makes it the most approachable entry point, while still delivering brutal set-piece fights.
