Survival
Best Survival Games on Steam
Survival games are really games about logistics under pressure. The hunger bar and the temperature gauge are just the timers; the actual play is deciding whether to spend today pushing further into unexplored territory or shoring up the base you already have. The best ones on Steam make that trade-off genuinely tense, whether the threat is an ocean full of things larger than you, a raider with a bolt-action rifle, or simply a cold night you were not ready for. These picks span solo crafting, co-op base building and hard multiplayer, and all of them have achievement lists that track how deep you actually got.

Subnautica
An underwater survival game where the map goes down instead of out, and every new depth needs better equipment before it stops being lethal. The pressure comes from what you cannot see, and the crafting tree doubles as the difficulty curve.

Rust
The purest hard-multiplayer survival on Steam, where the real threat is always other players and a base is only as safe as its weakest wall. Brutal to learn, but nothing else generates stories like it.

Grounded
Shrunk to insect size in a suburban back garden, where a raindrop is a hazard and a spider is a boss fight. The scale gimmick turns familiar objects into genuinely inventive level design, and it is excellent in co-op.

The Long Dark
Survival stripped of crafting-tree bloat: no zombies, no monsters, just a frozen Canadian wilderness and your own body temperature. The quietest game on this list and probably the most stressful.

Project Zomboid
An isometric zombie sim that models everything from broken bones to boredom, and expects you to die. Death is permanent and the game is upfront that this is the story of how you died, not whether.

Raft
Start on a few planks in open ocean and slowly build a floating base out of whatever the current brings you. The gentlest survival game here, and the most naturally suited to co-op.

The Forest
Crash-land in woodland occupied by cannibals who watch you, retreat, and come back in larger groups. The base building is solid, but the AI behaving like it is scouting you is what makes it stick.

Sons Of The Forest
The sequel goes bigger with seasons, a much larger island and an AI companion who genuinely helps. More systems and more spectacle than the original, at some cost to its focus.

Green Hell
Amazon rainforest survival that tracks individual wounds, parasites and your own sanity, and expects you to inspect your body for problems. Uncommonly harsh, with a real story attached.

Enshrouded
Survival crafting with a proper action-RPG combat layer and voxel terrain you can carve into freely. The building tools are the standout, giving it more creative range than most of the genre.

ASTRONEER
A colourful space survival and automation game built around deforming terrain with a vacuum tool. Lower stakes than everything above it, and much better for playing alongside friends who bounce off harder survival games.
